Torque
Question

A force F = αi^+3j^+6k^ is acting at a point r = 2i^-6j^-12k^ . The value of α for which angular momentum about origin is conserved is

Moderate
Solution

Angular momentum will be conserved if net torque acting on the system about the origin becomes zero.

Given force acting F = αi^+3j^+6k^-----(i)

and r = 2i^-6j^-12k^ = -2(-i^+3j^+6k^)----(ii)

If torque becomes zero then  then cross product should become zero. that is the two vectors must be parallel

Therefore, α2= 3-6=6-12α=-1
