A glass sphere of radius 10 cm has refractive index $μ = 1.5$ . A is the position of a point object and B is its image. If A and B are equidistant from the surface of the sphere then separation between A and B is

Solution

Since AP = BQ, the refracted ray MN inside the sphere, must be parallel to the diameter PQ.
For first refraction at the surface of the sphere
$\frac{1}{α} - \frac{1}{(- AP)} = \frac{1 .5 - 1}{(+ 10)} \Rightarrow AP = 20 cm$
$∴$ Distance $AB = AP + PQ + QB = (20 + 20 + 20) cm = 60 cm$
