Friction on horizontal surface

Question

A horizontal force of 100 N is applied a block of mass 10 kg is placed on a rough horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction, $μ_{k} = 0 .5$ . Find the acceleration of the block.

Solution

Here, m = 10 kg, g = $10 {ms}^{- 2}, μ$ = 0.5, F = 100 N
Force of friction,
$f = μN = μmg = 0 .5 \times 10 kg$
$\times 10 {ms}^{- 2} = 50 N$
Force that produces acceleration
$F^{'} = F - f = 100 N - 50 N = 50 N$
$a = \frac{F^{'}}{m} = \frac{50 N}{10 kg} = 5 {ms}^{- 2}$
