Law of conservation of angular momentum
Question

If polar ice caps melt, the length of the day

Easy
Solution

In the process of melting of ice, external torque acting on earth is zero. Therefore, angular momentum (L) of earth about the axis of spin is conserved.

L = I ω = Constant

⇒ I . 2π / T = L ⇒ T = (2π / L) . I

Due to melting of ice and action of centrifugal force, more mass is accumulated near the equator. So ' I ' increases and hence T also increases.
