A 2m long thin rod of mass 10 kg and cross sectional area 5 mm² is lying on a frictionless horizontal surface. A 1000 N force is applied to one end of the rod as shown in figure it young's modulus of the rod is $2 \times 10^{11} N / m^{2}$ , elongation produced in the rod is

Solution

When the rod is observed from its own frame, pseudo force
ma = 1000 N will act at the centre of mass C of the rod
$∴$ Elongation $δ = \frac{P \times (BC)}{AY} = \frac{10^{3} \times 1}{5 \times 10^{- 6} \times 2 \times 10^{11}} m = 1 mm$
