A magnet of magnetic moment ‘M’ is cut into two equal parts. The two parts are placed perpendicular to each other, so that their north poles touch each other. The resultant magnetic moment is__

Solution

Initial Magnetic moment $(M) = 2 l m = (m) (2 l)$
If the magnetic is divided into two halves perpendicularly then Magnetic Moment becomes (M/2)
$M_{R} = \sqrt{M_{1}^{2} + M_{2}^{2}}$

$M_{R} = \sqrt{{(\frac{M}{2})}^{2} + {(\frac{M}{2})}^{2}}$
$M_{R} = \sqrt{\frac{M^{2}}{2}}$
$∴ M_{R} = M / \sqrt{2}$ .
