The magnetic moment of a magnet is 0.1 Am² and force acting on each pole in a uniform magnetic field of strength 0.36 oersted is 1.224 x 10^-4N. The distance between the poles of the magnet is

Solution

We know that F= mB
$∴ m = \frac{F}{B} = \frac{1 \cdot 224 \times 10^{- 4}}{0 \cdot 36 \times 10^{- 4}} = 4 Am$
Further, M= m(2l) or 2l = M/m
$∴ 2 l = \frac{0 \cdot 1}{4} m = \frac{10}{4} cm = 2 \cdot 50 cm$
