Solution

When a man runs on the ground, he applies a force in backward direction. Friction prevents the motion in the backward direction by acting in the forward direction. The maximum applied force is ma, which must be equal to $\frac{mg}{4}$ hence maximum acceleration will be $\frac{g}{4}$ .
