A mass of 10 g moving horizontally with a velocity of $100 {cms}^{- 1}$ strikes a pendulum bob of mass 10 g.
Length of string is 50 cm. The two masses stick together. The maximum height reached by the system
now is (Take, $g = 10 {ms}^{- 2}$ )

Solution

From conservation of linear momentum, velocity of combined mass just after collision will be
$50 {cms}^{- 1}$ , as mass has doubled.
Now, $H = \frac{u^{2}}{2 g} = \frac{(0.5)^{2}}{20} m = 1.25 cm$
