Questions

In a meter bridge, the gaps are closed by two resistances P and Q and the balance point is obtained at 40cm . when Q is shunted by a resistance of 10Ω , the balance point shifts to 50cm . the values of P and Q are

a
103Ω, 5Ω
b
20Ω, 30Ω
c
10Ω, 15Ω
d
5Ω, 152Ω

detailed solution

Correct option is A

For meter bridge to be balanced PQ=l100−l PQ=4060=23 ⇒P=23Q When Q is shunted i.e. a resistance of 10Ω  is connected in parallel across Q.  So net resistance is 10Q10+Q .Now the balance point shifts to 50 cm i.e.P(10Q10+Q)=1 ⇒23=1010+Q ⇒20+2Q=30 ∴Q=5Ω     and        P=103Ω
