In the network shown, power dissipated in $2 Ω$ resistor is 8 Watt. What will be the power dissipated in $2 Ω$ resistor after the switch S is closed.

Solution

Before S is closed, $i_{1}^{2} \times 2 = 8 \Rightarrow i_{1} = 2 A$
E = emf of the cell $= i_{1} \times (2 + 3) V = 2 \times 5 V = 10 volt$
After S is closed power dissipated in $2 Ω$ resistor
$= \frac{E^{2}}{2} = \frac{10^{2}}{2} W = 50 Watt$
