Questions

One end of copper wire of length 2L and cross sectional area A is attached to one end of another copper wire of length L and cross section area 2A. If the free end of the longer wire is at electric potential of 8 volt and free end of shorter wire is at potential of 1volt,what is the potential of junction of two wires.

a
1.2 V
b
2.1 V
c
2.4 V
d
3.6 V

detailed solution

Correct option is C

resistance of the longer wire is R=ρ2LA and  that of the shorter wire is R2=ρL2A R1R2= 41  in series p.d  is directly proportional to resistance so total p.d 8-1= 7V will be distributed 4:1 ratio p.d across first conductior 75x4=5.6 V potential at the junction 8-5.6=2.4V
