A particle of mass 1 kg is thrown vertically upward with speed 100 m/s. After 5 sec it explodes into two parts. One part of mass 400 g comes back with speed 25 m/s, what is the speed of the other part just after explosion? (g=10 m/s²)

Solution

v = u – gt = 100 – 10(5) = 100 – 50 = 50m/s
mv = m₁v₁ + m₂v₂
1000 x 50 = (400)(-25) + 600v₂
50000 = -10000 + 600v₂
60,000 = 600v₂
There fore v₂ = 100 m / s
