The 3 equation for uniform acc

Question

A particle starts moving from rest with uniform acceleration. It travels a distance x in first 2 s and distance y in the next 2 s. Then,

Solution

The distance covered in 2 s, $x = \frac{1}{2} a (2)^{2} (∵ u = 0)$
= 2a
The distance covered in next 2 s,
$y = \frac{1}{2} a (4)^{2} - \frac{1}{2} a (2)^{2} = 6 a$
Now, $x / y = \frac{2 a}{6 a} = \frac{1}{3} \Rightarrow y = 3 x$
