If he has to catch the ball just before it reaches the ground, he should run with a velocity equal to (Take g =10 ms-2)

Horizontal range is maximum when angle of projection θ is 45o

Rmax=u2g=20210=40m

Time of flight, T=2usin45g=2×20×1210=22s

The player can catch the ball before reaching the ground if he covers a distance =4024=16m in 22s

The velocity of that player must be =1622=42ms1
