A prism of refractive index $\sqrt{2}$ has angle of prism $30^{0}$ . One of the refracting surface of prism is silvered. Find the angle of incidence $i$ for which the ray retraces its path

Solution

For light to retrace its path, it should fall perpendicularly on silvered side.
Then, according to Snell’s law,
$1 \times \sin i = μ \sin 30^{0}$
$\Rightarrow \sin i = \sqrt{2} \times \frac{1}{2} ∴ i = 45^{0}$
