Question

Rain is falling with speed $12 \sqrt{2}$ , m/s at an angle of 45^o with vertical line. A man in a glider going at a speed of u at angle of 37^o with respect to ground. Find the speed of glider so that rain appears to him falling vertically. Consider motion of glider and rain drops in same vertical plane.

Solution

Horizontal component of both should be same.
$\begin{array}{l} u \cos θ = v_{r a i n} \cos 45^{\circ} \\ \Rightarrow u \cos 37^{\circ} = 12 \sqrt{2} \times \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \Rightarrow u = 15 m / s \end{array}$
