A ray of light is incident at an angle of 60^o on a $\sqrt{3}$ cm thick plate $(μ = \sqrt{3})$ . The shift in the path of the ray as it emerges out from the plate is (in cm)

Solution

$μ = \frac{\sin i}{\sin r}, \sqrt{3} = \frac{\sin 60}{\sin r}, r = 30^{o} x = \frac{t \sin (i - r)}{\cos r}, x = \frac{t \sin (60 - 30)}{\cos 30} = \frac{\sqrt{3} x \frac{1}{2}}{\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}} = 1 cm$
