Total internal reflection - Ray optics and optical instruments

Question

A ray of light is incident normally on one face of 30º - 60º - 90º prism of refractive index 53, immersed in liquid of refractive index  μ as shown in figure.

Match List – I with List – II

Column-I

Column-II

A) μ=1p) Ray will exit from prism at AC
B) μ=43q) Ray will exit from prism at BC
C) μ=53r) Ray will exit from prism making an angle sin159 with normal
D) μ=32s) Ray will suffer a deviation δ such that 0δπ2
 t) Ray will exit from prism making an angle of sin158with normal

Difficult
Solution

Apply equation of refraction at (I) & (II) for different cases.

 A) C=sin135 =37

5/3×sin30=1×sinee=sin15/6=56.40δ=90+(56.4)=33.60 B) C=sin145=530

53×sin30=43×sinee=sin1(5/8)=38.60δ=90-38.6=51.4 C)

 D) C=sin1(0.9)=64

53×sin60=32sinee=sin1(0.96)=74δ=74-60=14
