Refractive index of a transparent material for violet light is 1.585 and that for red light is 1.485. A thin prism is made of this material and a ray of white light is incident on one refracting surface of this prism at near normal incidence. Then ratio of angle of dispersion to the mean angle of deviation is

Solution

$θ =$ Angle of dispersion $= (μ_{V} - μ_{R}) A = 0 .1 A$
$Mean refractive index = \frac{μ_{V} + μ_{R}}{2} = 1 .535$
$∴ δ =$ Mean angle of deviation $= (μ_{Y} - 1) A = 0 .535 A$
$∴ \frac{θ}{δ} = \frac{0 .1 A}{0 .535 A} = 0 .187$
