As shown in figure, smaller block m and larger block M move together under the influence of a horizontal force P. The larger block M moves on a frictionless horizontal surface. If coefficient of static friction between the blocks M and m is 0.5. Find minimum value of P. For which the smaller block will not move relative to the larger block.
Given m=1 kg, m=5 kg and $g = 10 m / s^{2}$

Solution

$\begin{array}{l} For P_{\min}, accelaration a = \frac{P_{\min}}{(5 + 1)} = \frac{P_{\min}}{6} m / s^{2} \\ Now f_{\max} = μN = mg \Rightarrow N = \frac{1 \times 10}{0 .5} = 20 N \end{array} N = ma = 20 \Rightarrow 20 = 1 \times \frac{P_{\min}}{6} \Rightarrow P_{\min} = 120 N$
