Dimensions of physical quantities
Question

In SI system, the magnitude work done is joule. In another system, where the fundamental physical quantities are in gram, centimetre and second, the
magnitude of work is

Moderate
Solution

Joule is SI unit of work. The dimensions of work in SI.

=[W1]=[M1L12T12]

But erg is CGS unit of work. The dimensions of work in

CGS unit =[W2]=[M2L22T22]

As, n1(u1)=n2(u2)

or n1[M1L12T12]=n2[M2L22T22]

Here, M1=kg,  L1=m,  T1=s

M2=g,  L2=cm,  T2=s

M1=1000  M2,

L1=100  L2

T1=T2   and  n=1

          n2=n1[M1M2][L1L2]2[T1T2]2

=1[1000  M2M2][100  L2L2]2[T1T2]2=107

      1  joule=107  erg
