A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 10m/s from the edge of a cliff 65m high. What will be its speed just before hitting the bottom?

Solution

Given that
Initial speed $u = 10 m / s$
Height $h = 65 m$
$∴$ from the equation $v^{2} = u^{2} + 2 g h$
Final speed $v = \sqrt{u^{2} + 2 g h}$
$\begin{array}{l} = \sqrt{100 + 2 \times 9.8 \times 65} \\ = \sqrt{100 + 1274} \\ = \sqrt{1374} = 37 m / s \end{array}$
