A suitcase is gently dropped on a conveyor belt moving at 3 m/s. If the coefficient of friction between the belt and the suitcase is 0.5. Find the displacement of suitcase relative to conveyor belt before the slipping between the two is stopped (g = 10 $m s^{- 2}$ )

Solution

As seen from the belt deceleration of the block a = $\frac{f_{k}}{m}$ = µg. slipping between the block and belt will stop, when the velocity of the block will be zero. Initial velocity of the block, as seen from the belt = v
$0 = v^{2} - 2 a s$
$s = \frac{v^{2}}{2 a} = \frac{v^{2}}{2 μ g} = \frac{3^{2}}{10} = 0.9 m$
