Question

A tank with a square base of area 10m2 is divided by a vertical partition in the middle.  The bottom of the partition has a small hinged door of area 80m2. The tank is full of water in one compartment, and an acid (of relative density 1.7).  In the other, both to a height of 4.0m.  Compute necessary force to keep the door closed.

Moderate
Solution

Hydro static thrust on the door = Hydro static pressure x surface area
\large \therefore F_w=(\rho_wgh)\times A
\large =10^3\times 9.8\times 4\times 20\times 10^{-4}=78.4N
\large F_a=1700\times 9.8\times 4\times 20\times 10^{-4}=133.28N
Net thrust on the door = (133.28 - 78.4)N = 54.88N
