A thin prism having refracting angle $4^{o}$ is made of a transparent material whose refractive index for violet light is 1.6 and that for red light is 1.4. Then dispersive power of the material of the prism is

Solution

Dispersive power $ω = (\frac{μ_{v} - μ_{r}}{\frac{μ_{v} + μ_{r}}{2} - 1})$
$∴ ω = \frac{(1.6 - 1.4)}{(\frac{1.6 + 1.4}{2} - 1)} = \frac{0.2}{0.5} = 0.4$
