Three masses of 16, 8, and 4 kg are placed in contact with each other as shown in fig. If a force of
140 N is applied on 4 kg mass, then force on 16 kg mass will be

Solution

The common acceleration of the system will be
$\begin{aligned} a & = \frac{F}{m_{1} + m_{2} + m_{3}} = \frac{140}{16 + 8 + 4} \\ = \frac{140}{28} = 5 m / s^{2} \end{aligned}$
$∴ Force on 16 kg mass = mass \times acceleration$
$16 \times 5 = 80 N .$
