Question

Two particles P and Q start from rest and move for equal time on a straight line. Particle P has an acceleration of 2 m/s2  for the first half of the total time and 4 m/s2 for the second half. The particle Q has an acceleration of 4 m/ s2 for the first half of the total time and 2m/s2 for the second half. Which particle has travelled larger distance?

Moderate
Solution

Assume that total time of journey = 2t
then distance travelled by P
DP=12×2t2+(2t)×t+12×4×t2=5t2
Distance travelled by Q
DQ=12×4×t2+4t×t+12×2×t2=7t2
DQ > DP
