Two rods one of aluminum length I₁, having coefficient of linear expansion $α_{1}$ and other of steel of length l₂ having coefficient of linear expansion $α_{2}$ are joined end to the end. The expansion in both the rods is same for the same variation in temperature. Then the value $l_{1} / (l_{1} + l_{2})$ is

Solution

Here $α_{1} l_{1} t = α_{2} l_{2} t$
or $α_{1} l_{1} = α_{2} b_{2} ∴ \frac{l_{2}}{l_{1}} = \frac{α_{1}}{α_{2}}$
or $\frac{l_{2} + l_{1}}{l_{1}} = \frac{α_{1} + α_{2}}{α_{2}} or \frac{l_{1}}{(l_{1} + l_{2})} = \frac{α_{2}}{(α_{1} + α_{2})}$
