Question

Two tanks A and B contain water at 30^oC and 80^oC respectively. Calculate the amount of water that must be taken from each tank to prepare 40 kg of water at 50^oC.

Solution

$m_{1} \times 1 \times (50 - 30) = m_{2} \times 1 \times (80 - 50) or m_{1} \times 20 = m_{2} \times 30 or \frac{m_{1}}{m_{2}} = \frac{3}{2}$
Mass of water from tank $A = \frac{3}{5} \times 40 = 24 kg$
Mass of water from tank $B = \frac{2}{5} \times 40 = 16 kg$
