Two thin metal strips each of 2mm thick, one of brass and the other of iron are fastened together parallel to each other, to form a bimetallic strip. If the strips are of equal length at 0°c . The radius of the arc formed by the bimetallic strip when heated to C is (Coefficient of linear expansion of brass = $19 \times 10^{- 6} /^{\circ} C$ and of iron = $12 \times 10^{- 6} /^{\circ} C$ )

Solution

$\begin{array}{l} R = \frac{d}{(α_{1} - α_{2}) Δt} = \frac{2 \times 10^{- 3}}{7 \times 10^{- 6} \times 80} \\ = \frac{1}{280} \times 10^{6} \times 10^{- 3} \\ = \frac{1000}{280} = 3 .57 m \end{array}$
