Questions

Two waves travelling in a medium are given by y1=2sin(3πtπ2x)  and y2=4sin6πt3π2x ,  where y1,y2 and x  are in cm and t in sec the displacement of a particle at x=1cm and t=1sec is

a
-2 cm
b
-3 cm
c
2 cm
d
6 cm

detailed solution

Correct option is D

For First Wave  y1=2sin3π×1−π/2×1 ⇒y1=2sin3π−π/2 ⇒y1=2sin5π/2=2sin2π+π/2          =2sinπ/2=2 cm  For Second Wave y2=4sin6π×1−3π/2×1 =4sin9π/2=4sin4π+π/2 =4sinπ/2=4 cm ∴according to superposition principle y=y1+y2=2+4=6 cm
