A 10 V Zener diode along with a series resistance is connected across 40 V supply. Calculate the minimum value of the resistance regulated, if the maximum Zener current is 500 mA.

$V_{i / p} = 40 V, i_{z} = 500 m A = 500 \times 10^{- 3} A = 0.5 A, V_{z} = 10 V, R_{s} = ?$
$I f i_{z} i s m a x i_{L} i s z e r o i = i_{z} + i_{L} = 0.5 + 0 = 0.5 A$
$A l s o, i = \frac{V_{i} - V_{z}}{R_{s}}$
$\Rightarrow R_{s} = \frac{V_{i} - V_{z}}{i}$
$\Rightarrow R_{s} = \frac{40 - 10}{0.5} = \frac{30}{0.5} = \frac{30}{\frac{1}{2}} = 60 Ω$
