Thermal expansion
Question

Volume of mercury in the bulb of a thermo-meter is 10–6m3. Area of cross section of capillary tube is 2 × 10–7m2. If the temperature is raised by 100°C, the length of mercury column is (γHg=18 × 10–5/°C)

Easy
Solution

\large \gamma_R=\frac {\Delta V}{V\Delta t}=\frac {\Delta lA}{V\Delta t}
\large \Rightarrow \Delta l=\frac {\gamma_RV\Delta t}{A}
\large =\frac {18\times 10^{-5}\times 10^{-6}\times 100}{2\times 10^{-7}}=9\times 10^{-2}=9cm
