Solution

When the two waves arrive in phase, then resultant amplitude = $a + a = 2 a$
$I_{1} = 4 a^{2}$
When the two waves arrive 90^o out of phase, then resultant amplitude
$= {[a^{2} + a^{2}]}^{1 / 2} = \sqrt{2} \cdot a I_{2} = 2 a^{2} Now \frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}} = \frac{4 a^{2}}{2 a^{2}} = \frac{2}{1}$
