Solution

Earth's gravitational attraction and hence weight of an object decreases at equator compared to the poles as the equator is situated at a greater distance from the centre of the earth compared to the poles $(g = \frac{G M}{r^{2}})$ .Also due to spin of earth about its own geometrical axis , the object placed on the surface of earth at the equator experiences centrifugal force, which reduces the weight of the object .
