Solution

Inspiration can occur if the pressure within the lungs (intra-pulmonary pressure) is less than the atmospheric pressure. For expiration the atmospheric pressure is slightly higher than the pulmonary pressure. This inverse relationship between volume and pressure is established in Boyle's law.
