Chloride shift facilitates
Chloride shift is also known as the Hamburger phenomenon (named after Hartog Jakob Hamburger). It refers to the exchange of HCO3− and chloride Cl− across the plasma membrane of RBCs. It facilitates the transport of carbon dioxide as bicarbonate.
