At electrical synapses, the membranes of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons are in very close proximity. Gap junctions allow the direct passage of ions from cell to cell. Hence, impulse transmission across an electrical synapse is always faster than that across a chemical synapse. Gap junctions are also  found in cardiac muscle tissue and visceral smooth muscle tissue.
