The kidneys excrete a variable amount of hydrogen ions ( $H^{+}$ ) into the urine and conserve bicarbonate ions ( $HC {O_{3}}^{-}$ ), which are an important buffer of $H^{+}$ in the blood. Both of these activities help regulate blood pH.
