Air Pollution and its Control
Question

Identify A, B, C, and D in the depicted diagram and select the correct option

Difficult
Solution

The given diagram is an electrostatic precipitator that can remove over 99 percent particulate matter present in the exhaust from a thermal power plant. There are electrode wires and a stage of collecting plates, The collecting plates are connected with the ground. The electrode wire is provided with several thousand volts of electric current. It creates a corona that releases electrons. The electrons attach to the suspended particles and make them negatively charged within a fraction of a second. Air with charged particles passes slowly over collecting plates. The particulate matter settles over them and is removed.
