BOD is measure of amount of biodegradable organic matter in sewage water. It is indirectly proportional to dissolved oxygen (DO). High BOD indicates low DO which means aquatic organisms are deprived of oxygen and are driven to death. So, when BOD is high, water is said to be highly polluted.
