Solution

An increase in CO₂ in the blood causes an increase in H⁺, leading to an increase. Chemoreceptors detect elevated H⁺and CO₂ levels and activate respiratory rhythm centre. Rapid and deep breathing (hyperventilation) occurs to exhale more CO₂ until H⁺are lowered to normal level.
