Last two (11th and 12th) pairs of ribs are different from all other ribs because
Dorsally they are attached to the thoracic vertebrae
Intercostal muscles are not attached to them
They join the tenth rib with the help of hyaline cartilage
Ventrally they are attached neither to the sternum nor to the cartilages of other ribs
The last two pairs of ribs are called floating ribs (vertebral ribs). They are dorsally attached to the thoracic vertebrae but are ventrally free.
