Solution

Oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve is sigmoidal in shape because hemoglobin has an increasing affinity for O2 as the number of bound O2 molecules goes up (positive cooperativity). No more binding is possible after four oxygen molecules bind. Binding of oxygen with haemoglobin is primarily related to the partial pressure of O2. Binding of oxygen with haemoglobin is primarily related to the partial pressure of O2. The amount of CO2 that can diffuse through the diffusion membrane per unit difference in partial pressure is much higher compared to that of O2. About 97 per cent of O2 is transported by RBCs in the blood and the remaining 3 per cent is carried in a dissolved state through the plasma.
