Question

Select the events that occur in the erythrocytes in the systemic capillaries.

A.  Dissociation of H2CO3 into CO2 and H2O.

B.  Dissociation of H2CO3 into H+ and HCO3-.

C.  Formation of H2CO3 from CO2 and H2O.

D.  Formation of H2CO3 from H+ and HCO3-.

Moderate
Solution

At the tissue, carbonic acid facilitates the formation of H2CO3 from CO2 and H2OH2CO3 dissociates into H+ and HCO3-. About 70% of CO2 is transported from the tissues to the lungs as HCO3-. At the lungs, oxygen binds to haemoglobin, forming HbO2, which is more acidic and unloads H+. This H+ binds to HCO3- to form H2CO3, which dissociates CO2 and H2O, and CO2 is exhaled.
