Solution

Sewage contains biodegradable organic waste. Bacteria utilise oxygen for decomposition and thus dissolved oxygen decreases. The amount of oxygen required by microorganisms for decomposition of organic waste is called Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). Sewage pollution increases BOD.
