The large intestine absorbs some water, minerals and certain drugs. The large intestine converts the chyme into faeces by absorbing water. Mass peristalsis drives the contents from the colon to the rectum. The distension of the rectal wall triggers defaecation reflex that results in defaecation. The large intestine also contains some bacteria that synthesise vitamin K and some vitamins of the B complex.
