Detailed Solution
Peptic or chief cells which secrete the proenzyme pepsinogen. The proenzyme pepsinogen, on exposure to hydrochloric acid gets converted into the active enzymepepsin, the proteolytic enzyme of the stomach. Pepsin converts proteins into proteases and peptones (peptides). So, when chief cells are non-functional, protein digestion is affected and it is broken down only by proteases of the small intestine.Parietal or oxyntic cells which secrete HCl.Mucus neck cells which secrete mucus. It protects the mucosal epithelium from excoriation by the highly concentrated hydrochloric acid.
