There are three main tenses:

Each tense has four forms:

  • Simple
  • Continuous (Progressive)
  • Perfect
  • Perfect Continuous

So in total, there are 12 tenses.

Present Tense

(a) Simple Present

Form: Subject + V1 (+ s/es for singular subjects)

(b) Present Continuous

Form: Subject + is/are/am + V1 + ing

(c) Present Perfect

Form: Subject + has/have + V3

Use: Completed actions with present relevance, experiences

Example: I have finished my homework.

(d) Present Perfect Continuous

Form: Subject + has/have + been + V1 + ing

Use: Action that started in past and is still continuing

Example: She has been studying since morning.

Past Tense

(a) Simple Past

Form: Subject + V2

Use: Completed actions in the past

Example: We watched a movie yesterday.

(b) Past Continuous

Form: Subject + was/were + V1 + ing

Use: Ongoing past action, interrupted by another action

Example: I was reading when she called.

(c) Past Perfect

Form: Subject + had + V3

Use: Action completed before another past action

Example: She had left before I arrived.

(d) Past Perfect Continuous

Form: Subject + had + been + V1 + ing

Use: Action continuing in the past up to a certain time

Example: They had been working for 2 hours before lunch.

Future Tense

(a) Simple Future

Form: Subject + will/shall + V1

Use: Future actions, predictions

Example: He will travel tomorrow.

(b) Future Continuous

Form: Subject + will be + V1 + ing

Use: Ongoing actions in the future

Example: I will be waiting for you.

(c) Future Perfect

Form: Subject + will have + V3

Use: Action completed by a future time

Example: By next week, she will have finished the book.

(d) Future Perfect Continuous

Form: Subject + will have been + V1 + ing

Use: Action continuing up to a future point of time

Example: By 2025, I will have been teaching for 10 years.

A conditional sentence consists of two parts: the main clause and the conditional clause (if-clause). There are three types of conditions:

  • Type I: Possible—related to the future.
  • Type II: Probable or Hypothetical—unfulfilled condition of the present.
  • Type III: Impossible or Imaginary—unfulfilled condition of the past.

The verb tenses in the two clauses adhere to this pattern.
